Mollison Wins ACC Player of the Week

Maryland continued its assault on the ACC Player of the Week awards Tuesday when Senior Attacker Sarah Mollison won the Offensive POW Award.

In the midst of an incredible season for the Terrapins, Mollison helped the team to two wins this week, a 17-8 beatdown of Towson and a 16-4 thrashing of #8 Penn.

Starting the week on the road at Towson, playing in front of her mother and brother who flew in from Melbourne, Australia, Mollison tallied 10 points on five goals and five assists, and moved into 4th place on the all-time assists list at Maryland. It further cemented another dominant performance for Mollison, who is the team's offensive architect from behind the cage and leads the conference with 35 assists on the year.

In the second game of the week, Mollison helped design five more goals for the Terps against Penn's 3rd ranked defense, accounting for two goals and three assists. Mollison moved around to the front of the cage more in this game and let Sophomore Alex Aust handle a majority of the behind-the-cage offense, showcasing her flexibility in the Maryland attack.

The Senior from Melbourne needs only one more assist to tie Assistant Coach Quinn Carney and Tewaaraton Trophy winner Caitlyn McFadden for 3rd on the all-time assists list, an honor she most likely will achieve Saturday against #4 North Carolina.

Shaking the Quakers

Coming to College Park with the third-best defense in the country, only allowing 6.25 goals per game, the #8 Penn Quakers looked like they might dig deep in the ground and not let the #1 Terps get at the cage. But after 60 minutes of action, Maryland reassured lacrosse fans everywhere why they are still the favorites to repeat.

Even without Preseason Player of the Year Karri Ellen Johnson, the vaunted Terrpain offense went to work early, and often. After a long first possession by the Quakers ended in a save for Junior goalie Brittany Dipper, the Terp offense jumped on the board with two quick goals. By the end of the first half, the Terps had an 8 goal lead behind hat tricks from Super Sophomore Katie Schwarzmann and Senior captain Laura Merrifield.

After 15 minutes in the second half, the Quakers had closed the lead to 7, but that was as close as they would get, with the Terrapins registering the last 5 goals of the game for another dominating win, final score: 16-4.

Now its seven up, seven down, in terms of nationally ranked opponents that have fallen by the wayside against the defending national champs. And its not like the games have even been close. Other than the Syracuse game, which ended 7-5 solely based on the Syracuse Stall tactics, the closest margin between the Terps and a ranked opponent was 7 against the at-the-time #3 Duke Blue Devils. The average margin of victory for the Terrapins in those 7 games against ranked opponents? 8.9, and 10 if you take out the Syracuse game.

So it's not just that the Terps are beating good teams, they are crushing them. The absolute dominance the Terrapins have shown up until this point in the season will be tested Saturday when the up-and-coming lacrosse powerhouse North Carolina Tar Heels, currently ranked #5 in the nation, come to the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex for an ACC battle.

As the number one seed in last year's NCAA Tournament, Maryland only had to play either Northwestern or UNC, as the two teams were on the other half of the bracket from the Terps. If the Terps want that same scenario again this year, a win against North Carolina Saturday is a must. And with the way the Terrapins have been firing on all cylinders against ranked and unranked opponents alike, the offensive machine will most certainly be present at the FH and Lax Complex.

Defending the Trophy

The date: May 30th, 2010. The dynasty was toppled, as the call goes, and the Maryland Terrapins had added a tenth National Championship trophy to their storied history.

As the months passed and players graduated, the next chapter in that history was just beginning. Minus Tewaaraton and Honda Sports Award Winner (not to mention ACC POY and Tournament MVP among many other awards) Caitlyn McFadden, who had moved on to an Assistant Coaching gig at the University of Florida, minus defensive anchor and All-American Karissa Taylor, minus a handful of other key Terps in all areas of the field, the stage was set for the Terps' title defense.

The questions were there. How would this team work offensively without McFadden? How about defensively without Taylor?

A tireless work ethic and excellent teaching and coaching from 8-time National Champion Cathy Reese (4 as a player, 3 as an assistant, and last year's as head coach) led the Terps through the Fall and Winter months and into the start of the 2011 season.

It started just as it did last year with the Richmond Spiders at the top of the schedule. However, this year's opener wouldn't be played among the mounds of snow on the football practice field. Rather it was played on a beautiful Spring-like day in Richmond, just the kind of day that makes for great lacrosse.

The questions were answered fairly succinctly in the first 60 minutes of the season, as the Terps rolled to an 18-7 victory over the Spiders highlighted by Preseason National Player of the Year Karri Ellen Johnson's career best 7 goals and Sarah Mollison with a school record-tying 6 assists. Sophomore Katie Schwarzmann wasn't shy in adding her name to the stat sheet either, racking up 5 goals in the season opener. And after coming up huge in the ACC Tournament and on into the NCAA's, Terp netminder Brittany Dipper kept her play at an elevated level tallying 5 saves on the afternoon while allowing only 7 goals.

As the season rolled on and the victories piled up, the Terps received a welcomed boost to their already potent attack when Senior captain Laura Merrifield returned to the lineup against the #3 Duke Blue Devils. Although inferior in goals scored, only one to her teammates Johnson's and Schwarzmann's five apiece afternoon, Merrifield's leadership was evident in the Terps first true test of the season. The 18-11 victory reinforced the team's confidence as it continued to move through the early parts of the schedule.

A few more double-digit wins, by 12 at Virginia and by 19 against George Mason, paved the way into a tough battle with the "Syracuse Stall". Syracuse Head Coach and lacrosse legend Gary Gait knew the potency of the Terps' attack and had his team milk the clock as much as possible to limit the possessions and shots Maryland had on National Goalkeeper of the Year Liz Hogan. But while the strategy paid of in the short run as the Orange held Maryland to a mere 7 goals, the Terps had the last laugh, walking away from the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex with win number 7 under their belts.

It's now already halfway through the 2011 Women's Lacrosse season and the #1-ranked and defending National Champion Terps are still perfect; 9-0 to be exact. Getting scoring from everywhere, 16 out of 26 (not counting the 3 goalies) Terps have tallied at least a goal this season, the Terps have only scored in single-digits once (the Syracuse Stall game). Maryland has already knocked off #16 Penn State, #3 Duke, #5 Virginia (on the road), #12 Syracuse, and #20 Boston College (road win) and still have 5 more chances to rack up the wins over top 25 opponents in #10 James Madison, #4 Penn, #6 North Carolina, #13 Princeton (all at home) and #20 Georgetown on the road.

With one of, if not THE toughest schedule in collegiate lacrosse, the road back to the title game is not paved smoothly with flowers and trees lining the way. The goals are coming in bunches, the defense is stonewalling excellent attackers, The Big Dipper is telling everyone to "get off her lawn" as Brian eloquently puts it, and the Terps are looking to keep the pedal to the metal. Stony Brook or bust.

Sunday's national championship game has been two years in the making. Last year the Terps fell just one game short of the dream matchup, but this season both teams made it back to the title game.

In sports there are always historically great teams that are forced to rebuild and comeback only to have someone else claim their mantel. That is the spot the Terps find themselves in. The Terps collected seven straight national titles up until 2001. Since then It has been Northwestern who has been the dynasty and won the last five.

Both teams come into this game very evenly matched and here are some of the big matchups to look out for:

1) Size Matters: Danielle Spencer vs Laura Merrifield
Spencer comes in at 6’2, while Merrifield towers in at 6’1 for the Terps. Both have been match up nightmares for opposing teams and in Sunday's game they have somebody their own size to pick on.

2)Goalie Matchup: Dipper vs Lomato
Both keepers are sophomores with similar stats. Dipper has shown her post season mettle in the past, especially in the ACCs, while this is Lomato's first time on the big stage.

3) Star Wars: caitlyn McFadden vs Katrina Dowd
This game may come down to, which superstar makes the last big play in the game. Both are scorers and offensive facilitators. But McFadden is arguably the best defender. The winner of this game will likely go on to win the Terwarraton trophy as well.

While those are some of the key match ups, here are some of the keys to the game:

1) Draw controls: Danielle Spencer vs Karri Ellen Johnson
Spencer leads the nation in the country in draw controls and the Wildcats do as a team. Spencer uses her size to get the ball herself. The Terps will need to keep pace in this area of the game.

2) Northwestern scoring offense vs Maryland scoring defense
The top offense versus the top defense in the nation is also a key point of emphasis. The Terps defense will have to outperform the Wildcats in a game that could be a wild shootout.

The Maryland Terrapins women's lacrosse team continued what they have called "hunting season" with a dominating win over Syracuse.

The Terps win 14-5 in a game that the Terps controlled from the opening draw. Maryland out shot, controlled more draws and groundballs than the Orange by a significant margin.

The Terps offense was led by Caitlyn McFadden, who celebrated her 22nd birthday in style with four goals. Karri Ellen Johnson, Sarah Mollison, Katie Schwarzmann and Laura Merrifield also scored a slew of goals in the win.

On defense Iliana Sanza who made her second appearance after injury made several important plays and forced turnovers with smart plays, which included setting her feet and taking a charge at a critical point in the game when the Orange was threatening to make a run.

The Terps will advance to play Northwestern, the defending 5-time consecutive champion Northwestern Wildcats.

Terps Prepare to Play Syracuse

The Terps head back to the final four for consecutive seasons looking to build off of last season. The Terps fell to UNC in this exact spot last season, but this year's team is far better equipped to make a national championship run, even though they have a lot of the same pieces.

A year a go the Terps were a young team with many "experts" doubting them in the preseason. But the Terps surpassed even the loftiest expectations to go undefeated through the regular season, claim the ACC title and make a final four appearance.

That experience from last year of being on the big stage and looking for more than just the final four along with a hunger from last year are going to be a factor in Friday's game.

The Terps are also seasoned and their young roster from last year is now a very experienced team, that Coach Cathy Reese has her stamp on it after four years of rebuilding the program.

Those factors are not to be discounted at the Terps look to win their first national championship in nearly a decade.

The Orange matchup very well to the Terps and have a lot of mirror-like qualities so these little things will go a long way in determining who will advance to the title game.

The Terps defeated Penn to advance to the semi-finals for the second consecutive season. The Terps will play the tournament's Cinderella team in Syracuse who was not seated, but still upset Georgetown and James Madison to reach the final four.

NCAA Tournament Bracket-ology

The Terps earned the top seed after posting the top RPI in the country and beating then-No.1- UNC in the ACC title game. And while winning the conference tournament is a great accomplishment, it really was much bigger than just the ACC title. That win gave the Terps the inside track to the top seed, which gives the Terps a nice path to the National Title game, assuming they take care of business. But as coach Reese loves to say, its a one game at a time approach, and if they keep that up they will be in great shape.

The Good

-The best part of being the top seed, looking ahead to the Final Four, is the fact that Maryland will only have to play UNC or Northwestern in the National Title game, not both as they would have had to do last season.

-The Terps have no ACC matchups until a potential national championship game. Conference games in the tournament are always dangerous because of how competitive and close they all play each other. Just two years ago Duke upset the Terps in College Park in the second round.

Teams in Maryland's bracket that are dangerous

-UPenn is a dangerous team in the Terps bracket and if the seeds hold up, its the Team the Terps will play. UPenn has a stout defense and have experience playing the Terps once this season, although it was a loss.

- James Madison might be the biggest sleeper in the tournament. They got the 5 seed and rightfully so. The Dukes have taken all of their top competition to the wire or won. They knocked off UVA and beat Towson, two very good teams. And the Terps mid-week matchup at JMU could have been bad. The Dukes methodical, but deliberate offense gave the Terps trouble and Maryland switched keepers during the game. Midweek road games are always tough, but this matchup could be very tough because the Dukes will not be intimidated.

-Georgetown is another tough team in the bracket. The Hoyas played Maryland very well at the start of the game and took a quick lead. Maryland was able to come back and rout the Hoyas. But in a final four game where the pressure will be on, its a position the Terps cant fall into again.

The Terps will take the field today with a lot on the line. The ACC Championship win vaulted them into the top spot in the polls and if they can hold serve against Dartmouth they will be the prohibitive favorites to get the top seed in the NCAA tournament.

While they are already pretty much guarenteed homefield advantage for the first two rounds and the final four and championship is set at Towson, the seeding holds bigger stakes.

The way it is right now, if the seeds were worked out Maryland would be in the top spot with Northwestern and UNC in the two and three seeds (not sure about the exact order of UNC and Northwestern, but for Maryland it would not matter).

In this scenario, the Terps would likely get a team they had beaten in the final four (again assuming they hold serve in the regular season finale and what should be two home games in the first two rounds) The likely matchups would be UPenn, Duke or Virgina depending on how things shake out.

The bottom line in all of this is that the Terps "just have to win baby!" as Al Davis once said. They could have a very clean road to the title game before likely taking on Northwestern or UNC.

North Carolina was the thorn in the Terps side. Maryland's only two losses of the last two seasons came at the hands of the Tar Heels, but the Terps flipped the script and overwhelmed UNC in the ACC Championship game to claim their second straight and seventh all-time ACC title.

The Terps set the tone for the game early as tournament MVP Caitlyn McFadden assisted Amanda Spinnenweber on a goal just 31 seconds into the game. The Terps never looked back as they outscored the Tar Heels 6-1 in the first half.

The Terps offense was led by McFadden who had three goals and dished out two assits. Meanwhile Laura Merrifield and Kristy Black added in two goals each. Sophomore Karri Ellen Johnson continued her streak of scoring a goal in every game by adding one in. Sarah Mollison and Spinnenweber also chipped in a goal.

While the Terps were rolling on offense and finding ways to beat the best goal keeper in the nation, the Terps defense stifiled the UNC offense.

Brittany Dipper, who had some struggles midseaon, was in top form as she set a career high 12 saves. A big performance by the Big Dipper is no surprise as she also had a career high 10 in the Terps ACC title win last year.

The Terps defense swarmed the midfield and used physical play to shut down the Tar Heels. Karissa Taylor and Brittany Poist set the tone and the added pressure kept UNC on their "heels" for the majority of the game.

Terps- Carolina Rivalry set for another chapter

The Terps and UNC have always had a rivalry across the board in every sport. But as of late the rivalry between the women's lacrosse teams has heated up.

The Terps had dominated the series since 2007, winning four straight, but in the NCAA final four last year UNC upset the Terps. Earlier this year in what was a perceived revenge game, the Tar Heels beat the Terps in Chapel Hill 13-9 on senior day.

After that game, UNC provided plenty of bulltien board material on the dailytarheel.com (UNC's student newspaper) Here is the complete link http://www.dailytarheel.com/content/womens-lacrosse-downs-umd-win and here is the specific quote:

“What was nice about this game is they’ve had a lot of, I guess you could say excuses about they didn’t play well, they didn’t show up to the final four,” UNC senior defender Kristen Carr said. “So it was really awesome for our team to come out and to make a statement and be like, no, this is who we are.”

So there is plenty of bad blood as these teams will meet up with the coveted ACC championship on the line. Unlike in the past two matchups, the Terps come in as the underdog, even though they are defending champs, and that has put an added chip on their shoulder. Talking to some of the players leading up to this not being No.1 in the conference has taken off some of the pressure and target on their back. Come Sunday the Terps plan on being the Hunters instead of the Hunted as they look to take down the Tar Heels who have had their number as of late.

UVA controlled the pace of the play in the first half and would not allow the Terps to kick their offense into gear, but at halftime the Terps adjusted. Coach Cathy Reese told her team, as she often does, that it was a new half and the team as a whole took it upon themselves to impose their will on the Cavaliers.

The Terps did just that as they dominated the pace of play in the second half and pushed the tempo on offense and swarmed in the midfield on defense. The uptempo style proved to be the difference as Maryland beat Virginia 10-6.

In the first half the Terps and Cavs stats were nearly identical in every category as they battled to a 2-2 tie. In the half the Terps offense was led by freshman Katie Schwarzmann and Brandi Jones who each notched a goal.

In the second half, everything went Maryland's way as the Terps out shot UVA 14-7 and led ground balls 7-5. The Terps went on a 5-0 scoring barrage to take a 7-2 advantage. Jones added in two more goals to complete a hat trick, while Laura Merrifield posted a second half hat trick of her own. The Terps also had two goals from Karri Ellen Johnson who continued her streak of scoring a goal in every game of her collegiate career. Meanwhile Sarah Mollison and Caitlyn McFadden continued their streak of points in consecutive games.

ACC Tournament Bracketology

After the first day of the ACC tournament, the No.2 seeded Terps will play No.3 seeded Virginia. The Cavs blew out Virginia Tech enroute to the match up and will provide the Terps with a juxtaposition of playing styles. The Terps run-and-gun against the Virginia slow and stalling offense. Just something to watch for in today's game. More on that in a minute.

On the other side of the bracket, Duke beat Boston College to advance. The Blue Devils will play No.1 (both in seed and in national ranking) UNC in today's early game. Duke certainly looked like a much better team than the one the Terps beat 17-4 earlier this season. Their midfield speed and swarming defense that was on display against the Eagles was more like the form they showed in last season's thrilling ACC title game.

With the top 4 seeds holding serve so far, this is the round where upsets can happen. And I have a hunch that the Blue Devils may just pull it off...

Back to the Terps matchup. Talking to Terps players the UVA stalling offense is frustrating, but it also forces them to take care of the ball and maximize each possession, which the team views as a good thing. This game will come down to one thing, whose style of play wins out? The Terps have had that edge since 2008 - winning four of the last five matchups.

The Terps closed out their ACC regular season schedule in style as they blew out Virginia Tech 18-4 at Ludwig field. Sarah Mollison and Karri Ellen Johnson combined for seven goals while the Terps had 13 different players score points in the blow out.

The Terps rebounded from their first loss of the season with an offensive explosion and lockdown defense to beat Princeton 13-6. The complete team performance led to three WMUC players of the game- Karri Ellen Johnson who tied a career high six goals, Brittany Dipper who was a force in goal with seven saves and Brittany Poist anchored the defense and flew all over the field.

Showdown: Key Matchups

The Terps and North Carolina matchup very well. The Terps powerful offense against the TarHeels' stingy defense is the key. But North Carolina's offense is improved and three matchups will likely decide this matchup.

Caitlyn McFadden vs Bosica
Pair of dynamic midfielders who play on both ends of the field. Both contribute to the defensive efforts, transition and offensive scoring attack.

Becky Lynch vs Karri Ellen Johnson
This is a battle of Super Sophs. Johnson has 35 goals and leads the Terps with 45 points. Meanwhile Lynch is second on the TarHeels with 24 goals and leads the team with 15 assists.

Terps offense vs Ripley
This is the most important matchup if the Terps are to win. They cannot pose predictable shots and really place the ball to get it past the Nation's best goal keeper. Ripley has the fewest goals-allowed this season and can shut down opposing offenses and was a major key to the UNC upset last season. The Terps have more than enough fire power to put up points against UNC, they did in the regular season matchup last year when they put up 13 goals.

Setting the stage for the showdown

This year's matchup between the Terps and Tar Heels is about far more than just another regular season battle.

Terps had won the last four meetings until the final four meeting last year.

In last year’s final four game the Terps trailed 5-7 in the second half and rallied to tie the game at 7. But The Tarheels answered the terps tying goal about a minute later to take an 8-7 lead they would never relinquish.

The Terps had a chance to tie the game and thought they had when Caityln McFadden seemingly scored a goal. But a crese violation wiped it off the board and the Tar Heels were able to kill the remaining time.

UNC’s defense made the difference. They disrupted the Terps offense, held them to just 22 shots and UNC goal keeper Ripley made several incredible saves.

While the Terps will likely have revenge on their mind, they did soundly beat UNC in their regular season matchup.

In the regular season meeting the first half was very close and a 5-5 tie, but the Terps would go on to outscore the Tar Heels 8-3 in the second half to win 13-8

The Terps used an offensive explosion to defeat Stanford 20-8.

Karri Ellen Johnson led all scorers with four goals, while seemingly everyone else also had a say on the stat sheet. Laura Merrifield notched three goals, while Brandi Jones, Caitlyn McFadden, Katie Schwarzmann, Alex Aust, and Kate Faas notched two goals each. Sarah Mollison, Kristy Black, and Brittany Jones all added in a goal as well.

The Terps fell into a 0-1 hole, but then reeled off 10 straight goals to make it 10-1 and never looked back. The Terps led 13-4 at halftime and outscored the quakers 7-4 in the second half.

Terps Outlast BC 7-6

The Terps started the game red hot and took a quick 3-0 lead. But playing their second game in the same week took a physical toll on them as they played "flat" according to coach Cathy Reese.

Boston College nearly took advantage of it when they rallied in the second half to make it a 7-4 game with over 13 minutes to play.

The Terps though they had scored the knockout goal with around four minutes to play, but an illegal stick wiped the goal off the scoreboard.

The Eagles took advantage and scored two goals to make it 7-6 with 1:46 to play. Boston College momentarily won the ensuing draw until Laura Merrifield forced a turnover and allowed the Terps to drain the remaining time to preserve the win.

Brandi Jones and Karri Ellen Johnson led the Terps with two goals each, while Sarah Mollison led in assists with two.

Terps Rally Past the Hoyas 20-11

The Terps overcame an early offensive onslaught by Georgetown to rally and rout the Hoyas 20-11.

The Georgetown Hoyas took a quick 5-2 lead with 19:08 to go in the first half. But the Terps held their poise and responded in a big way. They began to dominate the draw, clamp down on defense, and most importantly get the ball to the offensive end quickly in transition.

Katie Faas started the Terps on a 5-0 run and the team never looked back. The Jones sisters, Brittany and Brandi, each notched a goal during the run, while Karri Ellen Johnson and Laura Merrifield accounted for the rest during the run.

The Hoyas briefly answered with a goal to make it 7-6, but the Terps closed the half out with a pair of goals- one by freshman Katie Schwarzmann and the other by Caitlyn McFadden.

In the second half the Terps kept the pedal to the metal and outscored the Hoyas 11-5.

The Terps were led by Johnson who had five goals and McFadden had a hat trick.

As the great Wayne Gretzky once said, "You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take."

That was the case on Saturday as the Terps defensive pressure, offensive ball control and prowess on the drawn prevented New Hampshire from getting off many shots.

Maryland out shot the Wildcats 49-15 and the limmited opportunites were not enough as the Terps rolled to a 20-6 win.

The Terps dominated the draw, winning 20 of the 28 draws as Caitlyn McFadden and Brandi Jones tied for the team lead with three draw controls each.

The Terps used the extra possessions well with volume shooting to trump the UNH goal keeper who posted 14 saves. The Terps scored on 20 of 49 shooting, just a shade under 50 percent.

Ten different Terps joined in the scoring bonanza. Karri Ellen Johnson and Sarah Mollison each scored four goals, meanwhile Brandi Jones Kate Faas, Amanda Spinnenweber, and Sarah Matz each added in two goals. McFadden, Laura Merrifield, Katie Schwarzmann and Brittany Jones also added in a goal each.

Terps Surge Past George Mason

Athletes are creatures of habbit,but not even a midweek matchup against the George Mason could slow down the Terps as they beat the Patriots 16-4.

The Terps had a slew of scorers as Caitlyn McFadden posted a hat trick. Meanwhile Karri Ellen Johnson, Alex Aust, Amanda Spinnenweber, Brittany Jones and Katie Schwarzmann each posted two goals a piece. Laura Merrifield, Kate Faas and Sarah Mollison also added in a goal each.

Maryland started the game off with a 10-0 scoring run and never looked back. The Patriots did stop the running clock by cutting into the 10-goal deficit and made it an 11-2 game going into halftime.

The Terps chose to give everyone a chance to play and gain valuable experience. The Terps also had the luxury of pulling starting goalkeeper Brittany Dipper at halftime.

In the second half it was more of the same as the Terps closed out the game by outscoring George Mason 5-2 to close out the game.

Terps Race Past Stalling Cavs

After a closely contested first half, the Terps' offense exploded for five unanswered goals in the second half to power the Terps past the Cavaliers 11-5.

Virginia played the Terps tough in the first half and used a combination of speedy transition and stalling in the attacking zone to keep the Terps off balance. The Cavs were able to score first, but the Terps answered back on a Karri Ellen Johnson goal.

The teams continued to trade goals through the half as the teams battled to a 5-5 tie. But then Caitlyn McFadden gave the Terps a 6-5 lead and momentum with a goal just minutes before intermission.

Virginia had an opportunity to get back into the game in the second half when they won the openning draw and held the ball for about 10 minutes. But the Terps forced a turnover and Sarah Mollision scored for the Terps to open the scoring floodgates as the Terps would go on to outscore the Cavaliers 5-0 in the second half.

Johnson finished with four goals, McFadden had a hat trick and Mollison and Brandi Jones finished with two goals each.

The Terps second half shutout was a product of a swarming defense which allowed just 11 shots in the entire game and allowed the Cavs just a 50 percent clear percentage.

Terps Demolish Duke in Durham

This was supposed to be a tough and close battle bettween top-5 teams. But the Terps turned a rematch from last year's ACC Title game into a blowout.

The Terps dominated the Blue Devils in every phase of the game to win 17-4.

Like in last year's championship game, the Terps started off the game red hot and opened up a 4-0 lead. But unlike the title game, the Terps kept the pedal to the metal.

Amanda Spinnenweber, Sarah Mollison and Katie Schwarzmann each notched hat-tricks in the route.

Duke standout Sarah Bullard ended the run with a goal to make it 4-1, but the Terps reeled off five unanswered goals by halftime to build a 9-1 lead.

The Terps defense anchored by Brittany Dipper, who notched nine saves, did not allow Duke a comback opportunity, while the offense kept piling on the points.

Strong Second Half Powers Terps Past Penn State

The Terps overcame a four-goal halftime deficit to beat the Nittany Lions 17-9.

PSU started the game off very well and used ball control and defense to build a 6-2 lead with 21 seconds to go before halftime.

But on the ensuing draw, Caitlyn McFadden scored with just 2 seconds remaning to cut the decifit to 6-3, and drain the Nittany Lions' momentum.

After intermission, the Terps picked up right where they left off. Laura Merrifield scored a goal within the first minute of the half, followed by two McFadden goals to tie the game at six. The Terps would build a 14-6 lead about midway through the second half. Penn State never recovered as the Terps contiued their offensive onslaught enroute to the 17-9 win.

McFadden finished with six goals, one shy of her career high. Meanwhile four terps finished with two goals a piece.

Getting ready for the season opener

Last season the Terps surpassed even the loftiest of expectations as they rolled through an undefeated season and into the final four for the first time since 2003. But perfection was not meant to be as the Terps fell to North Carolina 8-7. This season, the Terps look to complete their unfinished business and bring home a national championship for the first time since 2001.

The Terps quest to get back to Towson starts today against the visiting Richmond Spiders led by first year head coach Stephy Samaras in chilly and snow piled College Park. It will be played at the football aritifical turf practice field at the University of Maryland because the field hockey and lacrosse complex is still blanketed from last week's blizzard.

Series with Richmond

Last year Maryland topped Richmond, 17-6, last season on the road. And Then-freshman Karri Ellen Johnson had a coming out party with five goals as the Terps rolled to their first win.

The Terps are a perfect 16-0 in the all-time series.

Revamped Terps

The Terps made a great run to the final four last year, but the starters played major minutes and really never had a chance to catch a breather unless they were blowing out their opponent.
This season the Terps should have plenty of quality depth with the addition of freshman Katie Schwarzmann to the midfield. She was an all-everything in high school- all met, all-american. "Athlete of the Decade" by the Carroll County Times. Schawrzmann was a three-sport standout, excelling in soccer, basketball and lacrosse, Schwarzmann was named first-team All-Decade in all three sports by the Carroll County Times.

The Terps also have an addition from within. Katie Fass missed all of last season with injury after a promising junior season. Faas comes into the year looking to make up for lost time and should really bolster the already explosive Terps’ attack.
